It’s interesting that democrats of the time seemed mostly anti-Reconstruction which may have not been entirely based on racist bias but was still not necessarily in favor of bettering black Americans. Whereas today democrats are generally very much in favor of equality for minorities.
Overall, fairly straight-forward background of the time.

Gould seems to be laying a foundation in the introduction to expose the unethical practices that naturalists have littered their works with in order to perpetuate the ideology of biological determinism, in the regard that race is one of those factors and all races are inferior to the white race.
