CL 2/27

  • Morgan (Toulmin Analysis)
  • Claim: That since African Americans needed strong amendments, past the depth of security for rights and freedoms afforded to whites by the constitution, this proved their inferiority.
  • Reasons: mental differences and differing traits, along with being descended from a race that sold its own self off into slavery, comparisons to native Americans and “portraying” the inability of African Americans to have the strength and fortitude to resist slavery (protect their freedoms)
  • Evidence: reference to Irving’s “Columbus”, quite a bit of anecdotal evidence,
  • Warrant: African Americans have consistently demonstrated their inferiority to whites.
  • Counterargument: doesn’t overtly state any counterarguments.
  • Rebuttals: N/A due to no counterarguments.
  • Dubois
  • There seems to be quite a lot of pathos used in way of sympathizing with the African American and viewing them as part of humanity. I also sense a lot of context and some purpose. A lot of context given he’s discussing the beginning decades of African Americans freedom being solidified in the constitutional amendments during this time. Attempting to convince his audience of the benefits African Americans can bring to the culture of America while maintaining a similar identity. He tries to address this concern of losing identity.
