HW 1/28

  • Who is James Gee? (Ph. D in linguistics, Former presidential professor of literacy studies at Arizona State, Extensive research on discourse/Discourses)
  • Are these the same genres as literature genres or music genres?
  • Of course I think I’m missing a fair bit not having read chapters leading up to this one. I think I can still understand the gist of what’s stated here and take from it what I can none-the-less.
  • I can’ t say it inspires me to read more of the book, however.
  • I generally have felt out of place at least mildly in most groups I’ve chosen to be a part of. I think it’s a bit of individuality and all the different bits of experience that make us different. I think this manifests itself quite frequently through language but seems to be rooted in perspectives and modes of thought processes.
  • Criterion 2 – Maybe shared/similar experience constitutes as enough to place individuals who never interact in the same community.
  • *Efficiency and conciseness* Very important in translating thoughts to language.
  • Assuming discourse communities are efficiently and concisely defined, what does this accomplish in the larger scheme?
